And we start with our top headlines at this hour

1.

Coronavirus infections in South Korea bounced back into the 500s on Tuesday while concerns of variants have also increased.

South Korea on Tuesday logged 541 new infections after daily cases had dropped into the 400s on Monday.

Of Tuesday's cases, 514 were local infections.

The capital area saw the majority of the cases, with 182 local transmissions in Seoul and 117 in the surrounding Gyeonggi-do Province.

Outside the capital area, the coastal city of Gangneung in Gangwon-do Province has decided to raise its social distancing measures to level two... after 43 foreign workers in the area tested positive.

The number of imported cases is also a concern due to the risk of variants entering the country.

In the past week alone, the country has identified 97 variant cases... which brings the total to 632.

Most are the UK, South Africa, and Brazil strains which are even more contagious.

Meanwhile, with a number of holidays coming up in May, health authorities warn against family outings due to the risk of infection.

2.

172 South Koreans in India, including workers from Hyundai Motor Company, arrived at Incheon International Airport Tuesday morning on a special flight back home.

They will stay in state-designated accommodation for seven days and must test negative on the sixth day after arrival before being able to self-isolate at home.

Additional tests are also to be taken before leaving self-isolation.

Another 2-hundred-11 nationals will return on Friday on a chartered flight by Asiana Airlines.

And authorities plan to operate ten more non-scheduled flights this month to evacuate as many South Koreans out of India as possible.

India, with 357-thousand-229 new COVID-19 cases reported on Tuesday, has now surpassed the 20 million mark in its total infection tally.

According to the country's health ministry, the virus has also claimed 3-thousand-449 more lives, raising the death toll to over 220-thousand.

But medical experts say actual numbers could be five to 10 times higher.

Despite a shortage of beds and medical oxygen, new patients are pouring into hospitals throughout the nation... putting India's health care system on the brink of collapse.

This has led the Indian government to desperately ask for emergency assistance from overseas.

3.

There have been concerns that South Korea's vaccine supply is running low, but the authoritIes say 430-thousand doses from Pfizer will be arriving on Wednesday.

After this shipment, South Korea will have received more than 2.4 million doses from the company... out of the 66 million agreed to under their deals.

Currently, the Pfizer shots are administered to seniors 75 and older... and in June, the plan is to give them to 640-thousand essential workers and military personnel younger than 30.

As for the AstraZeneca vaccine, new doses are due to start coming in again from May 14th, and will be rolled the very next day to people who need second doses.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has urged North Korea to return to the negotiating table.

He says the North should use the U.S.' new policy of achieving denulearization via diplomacy as an opportunity.

While attending the Group of Seven Foreign and Development Ministers' Meeting held in London on Monday... the top diplomat said the ball has now passed on to North Korea.

His remarks comes as he shared the results of the U.S. review of policy on the North... in which South Korean Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong welcomed... the results in that they were decided in a "realistic and practical direction" as the two met for the first time in two months at the G7 ministers' meeting.

The two miniters have also discussed the agenda items for the upcoming summit in Washington slated for later this month.

5.

Rain and strong winds have canceled over one-hundred-thirty flights to and from Jeju International Airport to be canceled on Tuesday.

As of eight PM, one-hundred-thirty-one flights have been canceled and 25 delayed according to the Korea Airports Corporation.

The numbers may rise depending on following weather conditions.

The decision comes amid forecasts of peak wind speeds of over 20 meters a second.

The Korea Meteorological Administration reports around 250 millimeters of rain to have fallen across different parts of Mount (한라산) Hallasan.

It's projecting more rainfall until the early hours of Wednesday.

Moving to weather forecast,

This evening we will continue to see nationwide showers, which will continue overnight. There are heavy showers on Jeju Island, with up to 200 millimeters in forecast. A heavy rain warning has been issued along with strong wind alerts issue on the mountainous area of Jejudo island. The Seoul metropolitan area and Gangwon-do Province can expect 20 to 60 millimeters. The Chungcheong-do provinces and southern regions will see 10 to 40 millimeters.

This round of showers will taper off by tomorrow dawn, which is Children’s Day. And less humid air mass will return on Thursday, which will make for a cool, breezy start.

Clear skies will prevail for the daytime nationwide. Seoul will get up to 18 degrees, Daejeon and Gwangju 20 degrees. Daegu and Busan 23 degrees.

Meanwhile, strong wind alerts are issued across all of coastlines tonight. Higher-than-normal sea levels are expected, so please stay away from water.
